About this Painting
The work is inspired by beach holidays in my youth. My family and friends would spend our summer holidays at the beach where we would play games, sit and talk for hours, spend evenings watching the sun go down and how the light reflected over the water and seascape before us. This is where I still love to be.
In painting these people, I have not shown much detail, they are essentially in silhouette, or will be once the sun sets. They convey a closeness, a bond of friendship. The brushstokes convey a movement in time, a mistiness - not quite clear. The memory is from a previous time. The viewer may see themselves in this painting. Perhaps they are central to a similar story like the lady in pink in the middle or a they identify with the figure in red of blue close by her side.
In new work for 2019, I continue to explore the gestures and stances of people. How they convey their emotions, conversations, intensity through the stance and gestures. These are painted using broad brush strokes in a semi-abstract way. There is not much detail in the actual people of these paintings and it’s not necessary because you can read them from their body language, their shapes, the angle of the head.
