About this Painting

Water Sky was inspired by time with friends and family at our family beach.  During summer holidays we would spend weeks at the beach where we would invent our own games, play, swim and talk for hours.  It was a time of fun, freedom, joy.  Memories of this time and experience are embedded into my soul.  Even now, thirty years later, this is where I love to be.  It is wonderful to see my own children enjoy this place, changed as it has, just like we did. Water Sky is set at sunrise.  The people watch on as the sun rises high over the ocean.

In painting these people, I have not shown much detail, they are essentially in silhouette, or will be once the sun is risen.  I called it Water Sky.  It was named by my young son.   The figures convey a closeness, a bond of friendship with the central lady. The brush stokes convey movement, fleeting memories, a mistiness that is not quite clear.  The memory is from long ago.  The viewer may see themselves in this painting.  Perhaps they are central to a similar story like the lady in pink in the middle or a they identify with the other figures by her side.

In new work for 2019, I continue to explore the gestures and stances of people.  How they convey their emotions, conversations, intensity through their stance and gestures.  These are painted using broad brush strokes in a semi-abstract way. There is not much detail in the actual people of these paintings and it’s not necessary because you can read them from their body language, their shapes,  the angle of the head.
